The Little Book of Animals was written in Ojibway and painted on birchbark by Soloman James, chief of Shawanagaw village, for his son, Louis, then aged twelve. Its expressive illustrations of the hunting to be found around Georgian Bay open a window onto the life of the period, a view that is brought into clearer focus by the accompanying letter and translations made by a missionary for the local Indian Agent.
