This is the `editio princeps` of the oldest bookbinders` manual. This French-Dutch bilingual manuscript, which is now in the collections of the Plantin Moretus Museum in Antwerp, was written by the German bookbinder Anshelmus Faust for the cistercian abbey of Saint-Bernhard, near Antwerp. The manuscript is preserved in a German-style dos-à-dos binding. Georges Colin comments on these kinds of binder`s manuals, their recipies and techniques for e.g., the colouring and gilding of leather and parchment, the preparation of the colours, the binding techniques, etc. This volume also contains reproductions of both the original manuscript and its binding, in addition to annotated transcriptions of the French and Dutch texts and a transcription of the text in modern French.
