Herman de la Fontaine Verwey (1903-1989) occupied, between 1954 and 1974, the first chair for the science of the book as a professor at the University of Amsterdam. He also was, since 1941, librarian of the Amsterdam University Library. In 1969 he was one of the founders of the scholarly periodical on the history of the book in the Low Countries Quaerendo of which he was a member of the editorial staff until his death in 1989.
